Many of the best antivirus providers provide a no-cost bootable recovery disk for disinfecting your computer following an infection. These are Linux-based programs that can be used to clean a computer infected with malware, if it’s unable to start up or isn’t scanned by the standard antivirus program running on Windows. I would recommend the Kaspersky disc for its ease of use (though it might not work with certain Dell systems).

You can also access similar features with the Avira or ESET rescue disks, which have an interface with a graphic design, but require an external USB or CD drive to boot. Both of these options will detect and identify any malware on your system. However the virus definitions may not be regularly updated like the rescue disks based on Linux.

The Trend Micro Rescue Disk is another great choice. It’s also among the smaller disks on this list, at around 70MB. It doesn’t come with an interface that is graphic, but it’s fast and comes with some customization options. It is able to mount specific files and drive volumes or even individual folders.

Finally, you can get an excellent virus scan from the Comodo rescue disk although it’s not as flexibility of the Linux-based options mentioned above. It is however a very effective tool for detecting and deleting the types of viruses that can hide themselves in Windows files to prevent detection by standard antivirus programs. It is possible to choose a text-only interface or a full-graphical interface. You can also run a smart scan or a custom scan.
